GPU/BGA Reballing

GPU/BGA Reballing

Staffordshire Computers provides a graphics chip reballing service at a fixed cost of £79.95inc vat.

GPU reballing is a cost effective way to permanently repair a GPU/BGA fault. Unlike many businesses, here at Staffordshire Computers we use the latest infrared (IRDA) technology to repair your faulty chip. As far as we know, no other business local to Staffordshire provides this type of service. Don't be misled by claims that a reflow does just as good a job. For a proper repair reballing really is the only way to go.

What is reballing? Reballing involves the removal of the GPU chip or BGA chip from the motherboard and then replacing the chip using superior solder connections. We use infrared technology to remove and replace the components which reduces heat stress on the board and surrounding components which in turn reduces the risk of damaging other parts of your motherboard.

How long does it take? Reballing is not a simple job, it requires care and skill to reball a GPU correctly and as such we do not offer a sameday turnaround with our reballing service. Reballing may take up to 72hours to complete. A proportion of this time will also involve testing the newly reballed chip in order that we can be confident of a 100% perfect repair for our customers.

Does reballing guarantee to fix my problem? Unfortunately not all GPU / BGA problems can be solved by reballing. We currently experience an average success rate of approximately 80%. Of the remaining 20% chips or motherboards are damaged beyond repair by the original overheating issue or by previous reflowing attempts made by other companies or individuals. We strongly recommend getting your laptop GPU reballed with us to ensure the highest possibility of a successful and permanent repair.

What warranty to you provide? We provide a 30day return-to-base warranty on our reballing service.

What causes the GPU problem? Thermal cycling (overheating) of lead-free solder over time causes weaker solder bonds, solder voids, brittle and cracking/seperating solder, 'black pad' and pad cratoring. All of these issues with the GPU are caused by the solder going through so many thermal cycles due to the lack of heat dispersion. Put simply: The solder joining GPU to the board becomes damaged and must be replaced.
